What to Do After
You Get a Website Built.

Most business owners think the work is done when the website goes live. It is not. There is one step that almost everyone skips — and it is the step that determines whether the site actually produces calls.

Submit your site to Google Search Console.

Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that tells Google your site exists and asks it to index your pages. Without this step, Google may not find your site for weeks or months. It takes ten minutes. Go to search.google.com/search-console, verify that you own the site, and submit your sitemap. Your developer can do this if you are not sure how.

Set up your Google Business Profile.

A Google Business Profile is the listing that appears when someone searches for your business type in your area. It shows your phone number, your hours, your address, and links to your website. It is free and it is one of the most effective things a local business can do for visibility. If you do not have one, set it up at business.google.com before you do anything else.

Check the site on your phone.

More than 70 percent of local business website visits happen on mobile. Check that everything looks correct, loads quickly, and that the click-to-call link actually dials your number. Fill out the contact form yourself and confirm you receive the submission. These checks take five minutes and catch problems before customers encounter them.

Make sure the structure is correct before you drive traffic.

Any money spent on advertising — Google ads, social media, direct mail — is wasted if the website it sends people to does not convert them into calls. Fix the structure first. Then drive traffic. The order matters.
