Check these five things on your phone right now. If two or more fail, your website is losing you customers every day.

1. Can you tap to call in under three seconds?

Open your website on your phone. Without scrolling, can you see your phone number and tap it to call immediately? If you have to scroll, search, or squint — that is a structural failure. Most visitors will not bother.

2. Does it say where you work in the first sentence?

Does your website tell visitors your service area before they scroll? If someone found your site and does not know within five seconds whether you serve their area, they go back to Google.

3. Is there a specific reason to call you vs. the next result?

Your license number. How many years you have been in business. A specific guarantee. Something that distinguishes you. If your website could belong to any business in your trade, visitors have no reason to choose you specifically.

4. Does it work correctly on a phone?

More than 70 percent of local business website visits happen on mobile. If your site is hard to read, slow to load, or has buttons that are difficult to tap on a phone, you are losing the majority of your visitors before they have a chance to contact you.

5. Does the copy sound like your business?

Read your website out loud. Does it sound like you talking to a customer, or does it sound like a generic template? Visitors respond to copy that sounds like a real person who knows their trade. Generic copy signals a generic business.
